An automotive electrician installs, maintains, and repairs the electronic components and electrical wiring in motor vehicles. A motor mechanic maintains, tests, and repairs the mechanical parts of light motor vehicles such as suspension, transmissions, brakes, and steering. A panel beater repairs damages to fibreglass, metal, and the plastic body parts of vehicles, and they also form vehicle panel replacements. Lastly, a vehicle painter prepares the surfaces of vehicles, mixes and matches colours, and paints the vehicles.

Job Requirements and Eligibility

If you want to be an automotive electrician, you would be eligible for skilled migration if you belong to the following programs: Employer Nomination Scheme, Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme, Temporary Business (457 Visa), and Point-Based Skilled Migration Visa. For panel beaters, they usually need to complete a certificate in panel beating. They could also learn through apprenticeship from a company, and they should be well versed with certain equipment such as oxyacetylene cutting equipment, planishing hammer, and electric welding equipment.

Job Outlook

Many automotive trade companies in Australia are sponsoring overseas workers to become 457 workers. Stronger average growth is expected for automotive electricians, motor mechanics, and panel beater, while moderate growth is predicted for vehicle painters.  

Salary Details

An automotive electrician could expect earning $1,044 per week. This is for a full-time (before tax deductions) job, according to Australia's Job Outlook website. On the other hand, panel beaters could earn up to $869 per week while motor mechanics could receive $1,000 weekly pay. A full-time vehicle painter could earn $1,125 per week, according to the same source. 

Skill Level, Assessment, and Licensing Skill level assessment in Australia may be given by different authorities based on your occupation of choice. Motor mechanics, panel beaters, vehicle painters, and automotive electricians may have their skills assessed by the Trades Recognition Australia (via Vetassess).
